Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI)

Trust-Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI®) is an evidence-informed, attachment-based, and trauma-informed approach developed by Dr. Karyn Purvis and Dr. David Cross at the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development at Texas Christian University, where they created the model.

TBRI recognizes that many children who have experienced abuse, neglect, trauma, loss, foster care, or multiple placements need more than traditional parenting strategies. They need caregivers who understand how trauma affects the brain, behavior, and relationships. TBRI helps caregivers:

• Build trust
• Reduce challenging behaviors
• Improve emotional regulation
• Strengthen attachment
• Increase caregiver confidence

The three principals of TBRI are:

 CONNECTING: Building safe, trusting relationships. Children heal best through safe relationships.

EMPOWERING: Meeting physical and emotional needs before behaviors escalate.

CORRECTING: Teaching rather than punishing. The goal is to teach skills, not simply stop behaviors.

TBRI Core Training 

A 9-hour evidence-informed caregiver training. (Virtual or In-Person)

Individual Coaching 

In-home, virtual, or telephone consultation.

Crisis Support

Immediate guidance for families experiencing behavioral or placement challenges.

Monthly Support Groups 

Opportunities for caregivers to learn, connect, share experience, and receive support.

Annual Refresher Training 

Helping caregivers continue developing their TBRI skills
